A fantastic turnout for this year’s Switch on and Shop

Marlow’s High Street was filled from end to end again this year for 2017’s Switch on and Shop, with Russell Brand, the comedian, writer, actor and presenter doing the honours to switch on the town’s beautiful lights display. Families flocked to the town centre to enjoy the snow, the carol singing, the Christmas displays and the ceremony from the top of a double-decker bus outside the Chequers pub.

The crowd was delighted by Russell’s very funny speech.  He said “I am thrilled to be here and I’m really, really excited and honoured. I know it was a controversial decision but I live here and I love it here.  For a moment I thought I was going to be as popular as the lorry driver who broke the bridge!  Every time I come across the bridge to Marlow, I feel like I’m coming back home. I really love it here.”

He mentioned many local businesses and restaurants, in particular Tom Kerridge.  He said Tom was an original, innovative person who has made him feel very welcome in Marlow.

Alluding to reports in national newspapers, he went on to say “Obviously I wouldn’t accept money to do something like this. I am doing this because like you, I’m proud to be part of this community.”  To hear his speech in full visit My Marlow Facebook Page

Russell then pushed the plunger, assisted by Mayor Jocelyn Towns, lighting up the beautiful Christmas lights and Christmas tree in the High Street.

Following the switch on and much to the delight of his fans, Russell spent quite some time talking to them and having selfies taken.

“Russell did us proud,” Mayor Jocelyn Towns said. “It was delightful to see him and his family enjoying such a great welcome from the people of Marlow, and his words about Marlow were heartwarming as well as very funny. We’re thrilled that he enjoys being part of this great community.”

as “Switch On and Shop” celebrity

Marlow Town Council has confirmed that comedian, writer, actor and presenter Russell Brand will illuminate Marlow’s stunning Christmas lights display at this year’s Switch on and Shop event on Thursday, November 23rd.

Snow machines will provide real snow from around 6.00 pm as carol singers entertain shoppers taking advantage of later opening times. Local celebrity Russell Brand will flick the switch from the top deck of a London bus outside The Chequers pub in the High Street, lighting up the Christmas tree on the Causeway as well as the many smaller trees and garlands of lights around the town.

Cllr. Jocelyn Towns, Marlow Town Mayor, said: “We’re delighted that Russell has agreed to help launch our Christmas season in Marlow this year. He’s an active participant in local events and we’re so happy he was able to fit Switch On and Shop into his busy schedule this year. ”

Shops will open late, and there will be special promotions, offers and Christmas displays throughout the town. Marlow FM and carol singers will be there to keep the Christmas spirit going.

The event starts at 6.00 pm, with the High Street closed to traffic with effect from 5.00 pm, with total closure of the High Street from 5.30pm - 7.30 pm for the switch-on ceremony, which will take place at approximately 6.30 pm.

Mary Berry draws thousands to the 2016 festive illuminations

People flocked into Marlow on Thursday evening 24th November, for the town's fourth annual Switch on and Shop event, where Mary Berry was the celebrity guest.  More than 6,000 people were estimated to have attended with crowds filling the High Street from top to bottom.

At 6.30pm Mary was escorted to the top of the double-decker bus in the High Street, where she was welcomed by Marlow FM's Tim Ashburner and Town Mayor Cllr Bob Johnson, to huge cheers from the crowds.  People hung from first and second storey windows along the High Street to wave as she joined in the countdown and pushed the plunger to illuminate the centre of Marlow.

"It's fantastic - I've never seen so many people in the centre of Marlow," said Mayor Bob Johnson.  "Mary is a fan of Marlow; she loves coming here to shop and to eat.  She certainly did us proud at the Switch On and we're so grateful to her for making the event extra special this year."

After the lights went on, Mary did a live interview with BBC London News, who had been in the town earlier in the day talking to retailers about the bridge closure and the news of its imminent opening.
