Civic Service 10th June 2018

The sun shines on Marlow’s Civic Service.

On a brilliant Sunday afternoon on 10th June, residents of Marlow and local dignitaries gathered at All Saints Church for the Town Mayor’s annual Civic Service.

The service was attended by the High Sheriff of Bucks, Prof. Ruth Farwell; Deputy Lieutenant Mr Roy Collis; Marlow Mayor Cllr Chris Funnell; Dominic Grieve, QC, MP; and mayors and other dignitaries from surrounding areas. The Venerable (Air Vice Marshall, RAF) Jonathon Chaffey took the service with Reverend Dave Bull, the Rector of All Saints Church. The Children’s Church Choir sang beautifully and was given a special round of applause.

Dominic Grieve, QC, MP for Beaconsfield, gave a reading while Jonathan Chaffey’s address made mention of the success of Marlow Town Council’s parking campaign.

Mayor Chris Funnell said: “My objective as Town Mayor is to ensure that we keep our focus on community. We need to work hard to address the issues that affect this town and we need to do so with patience and humility, in collaboration with other members of our team.

“At the annual Mayor’s Civic Service we recognise and show appreciation for everyone who contributes to this wonderful community. It’s an occasion when Councillors re-iterate their dedication to the town.”

Residents of Marlow and local dignitaries gathered at All Saints Church in Marlow on Sunday, 18th June for the town’s annual Civic Service.

“The Annual Mayor’s civic service is a key event in Marlow’s civic calendar,” Jocelyn Towns, Marlow Town Mayor, said. “Its main purpose is to recognise and show appreciation for everyone who contributes to our wonderful community and for us as Councillors to re-iterate our dedication to the town.”

The service coincided with the culmination of the Love Marlow festival, a three-week celebration which aims to inspire togetherness in Marlow. The Mayor thanked the organisers and all who took part for introducing the event to the community.

The service was attended by the Lord Lieutenant, Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, High Sheriff of Bucks, Mr Peter Kara, along with mayors and other dignitaries from surrounding areas. The Venerable (Air Vice Marshall, RAF) Jonathon Chaffey took the service with Reverend Dave Bull the Rector of All Saints Church and Tony Trelfall of Churches Together Marlow.

Morris Dancers entertained guests on arrival at the Compleat Angler for a reception following the service. Their colourful costumes and dancing made for a very quintessential English summer afternoon by the river.  The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Chris Funnell and Dominic Grieve, MP joined in with the dancing which is not something you would see every day!

A cheque presentation was made by Past Town Mayor, Bob Johnson to Mrs Debbie Raven, Chief Executive of Thames Hospice, his chosen charity for his second term of office. The plate collection went to Mayor Jocelyn Towns’ chosen charity for this year, Macmillan Cancer Support.
